fob

fob
1. noun /fɒb/
a) A little pocket near the waistline of a pair of trousers or in a waistcoat or vest to hold a pocketwatch; a watch pocket.

1711 Jonathan Swift, Windsor Prophecy:

b) A short chain or ribbon to connect such a pocket to the watch. <! This needs a good quote or citation. As a child I saw many men who carried pocket watches, including my father, grandfather, and uncles. "Fob" was something attached to the chain as decoration or directly to the watch as a grip to facilitate pulling out the watch (whether or not there was also a chain). I never heard the watch chain or cord attached to the watch called "fob". And, the chain did not connect the "pocket to the watch"; the chain connected the watch to a tab on a vest, a belt loop, a safety pin, or even to a suspender strap. A fob attached to a drooping chain would have been mainly an ornament.

2. verb /fɒb/
