Nagorno-Karabakh Autonomous Oblast
Autonomous oblast of the Soviet Union created in the Azerbaijan SSR in 1923 and lasting until 1991. Populated overwhelmingly by Armenians it broke away from Azerbaijan and after a bloody full-scale war gained independence as Nagorno-Karabakh Republic.
